Pause

I have not received any questions in awhile, and I am busy as a doctoral student, so I will not be updating this site regularly. If you do have a question that I could answer, I'd be happy to do so, I just will not be regularly updating the site for awhile. Thank you for your interest in my blog!

Jesus Christ, The Son of God

Happy Easter! At this time of year when we remember our Lord and Savior and His sacrifice for us, I want to direct you to a wonderful new site put in place by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, devoted entirely to the Lord Jesus Christ. Click here to go to the site, or click on the new link to the right. May we all remember the true meaning of Easter and our Lord who made it possible for us to live again with our Heavenly family.

Do Mormon's Believe in the Bible?

Yes, absolutely! The Bible is a testimony of Jesus Christ (actually, two testimonies- the Old Testament, and the New Testament). The Book of Mormon is, as the title states, Another Testament of Jesus Christ. Here are some quotes about the Bible from church sources:

From BYU.edu- "Latter-day Saints accept the Bible as one of the Church's four standard works and believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly (Articles of Faith 8). Foremost among its virtues is the declaration that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, through whom eternal salvation may come to all. While Latter-day Saints revere the Bible as the word of God, the Prophet Joseph Smith recognized that translations do not reflect totally and exactly the original words and intentions of the ancient prophets. He therefore thoroughly studied the Bible, as instructed by the Lord, and prepared the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible. The Church has also produced an indexed and annotated version of the King James Bible. Latter-day Saints study the Bible, as they do all scriptures, in conjunction with other standard works and modern revelation. Fundamental to Latter-day Saint belief is the idea that the Bible is harmonious with other scripture; when used together, these scriptures enhance one another and aid modern readers in correctly comprehending and interpreting these texts.
abstracted from "Bible: LDS Belief in the Bible," in Encyclopedia of Mormonism, ed. Daniel H. Ludlow, 4 vols. (New York: Macmillan, 1992), 1:108."

From LDS.org- "The Bible is a collection of sacred writings containing many of God’s revelations. It is a record of His dealings with some of His children from the Creation through the ministries of Jesus Christ and His Apostles. It was written by prophets and historians who knew God and testified of Jesus Christ. It is read and revered by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and they study it regularly.

The Bible is not God’s final revelation to humanity, however, and neither is this collection of sacred writings complete. The Bible itself speaks of other authoritative books of scripture including books of Nathan the prophet and of Jehu and Enoch, the prophecy of Ahijah, the visions of Iddo the seer, and even missing epistles of Paul (see 2 Chronicles 9:29; 13:22; 20:34; 1 Corinthians 5:9; Jude 1:14). Other books of Latter-day Saint scripture—the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price—clarify the gospel as taught in the Bible and corroborate the truthfulness of the Biblical witness of Jesus Christ."

We use the King James version of the Bible in English. Elsewhere, the church has recommended certain versions that are the standard in that language. We see the Bible as the word of God and revere it as sacred scripture.

Special Underwear?

I have often been asked about Mormons, or member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints wearing "funny underwear"? This is in reference to what we call "garments." Before I say more, I must state that this is a holy topic and is not something that we take lightly. So the short answer is, yes, we do wear special undergarments, but they are not anything that odd. They are made of normal underwear material, are just plain white, but they have special meaning to the wearer. Here is what the official church explanation is:

" Like members of many religious faiths, Latter-day Saints wear religious clothing. But members of other faiths — typically those involved in permanent pastoral ministries or religious services — usually wear religious garments as outer ceremonial vestments or symbols of recognition. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, garments are worn beneath street clothing as a personal and private reminder of commitments to God.

Garments are considered sacred by Church members and are not regarded as a topic for casual conversation. "

That pretty much covers it. Only members of the church who have reached a certain level of spiritual progression and have made covenants to follow Christ wear the garments. And as the quote says, they help remind us of our commitments to God. They truly become a constant reminder to us. I love the fact that they are under the clothing, in that they remind us of our commitments to love and serve God without "sounding a trumpet" to the world saying, "look at how spiritual and amazing I am." They are private and encourage us to be better Christians.

Myths Vs. Reality

This video came from the official Church Newsroom. Here is what they said: A 10-minute video originally produced for the large number of journalists visiting Salt Lake City for the 2002 Winter Olympics has been updated and posted on Newsroom today to help counter persistent myths about the Church.

Myths & Reality was developed as a primer on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was shown to a large gathering of NBC producers and reporters before the 2002 Games to help orient them to Mormon beliefs, practice and culture. NBC was the official media sponsor of the Olympics in 2002 and invited the Church to make a presentation to its large Olympic Games team.
