Special Underwear?

I have often been asked about Mormons, or member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints wearing "funny underwear"? This is in reference to what we call "garments." Before I say more, I must state that this is a holy topic and is not something that we take lightly. So the short answer is, yes, we do wear special undergarments, but they are not anything that odd. They are made of normal underwear material, are just plain white, but they have special meaning to the wearer. Here is what the official church explanation is:

" Like members of many religious faiths, Latter-day Saints wear religious clothing. But members of other faiths — typically those involved in permanent pastoral ministries or religious services — usually wear religious garments as outer ceremonial vestments or symbols of recognition. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, garments are worn beneath street clothing as a personal and private reminder of commitments to God.

Garments are considered sacred by Church members and are not regarded as a topic for casual conversation. "

That pretty much covers it. Only members of the church who have reached a certain level of spiritual progression and have made covenants to follow Christ wear the garments. And as the quote says, they help remind us of our commitments to God. They truly become a constant reminder to us. I love the fact that they are under the clothing, in that they remind us of our commitments to love and serve God without "sounding a trumpet" to the world saying, "look at how spiritual and amazing I am." They are private and encourage us to be better Christians.
